The Very Small Home

Japanese Ideas For Living Well In Limited Space.
In Japan small spaces are dealt with more creativity than anywhere else on the planet. At least that's the impression I get when I look at Power Unit Studio, Nendo, and Bow-Wow. The Very Small Home is authored by two Japan-based architects, Azby Brown (originally from New Orleans) and Kengo Kuma. The book surveys 18 recent houses, from ultramodern to Japanese rustic, and focuses on the "big idea", as in how natural light, atriums, clever kitchen design, unobtrusive partitions, and free-flowing circulation paths makes the house feel more spacious than it actually is. "The result is a very human sensibility that runs through the book. a glimpse of the dreams and aspirations that these unique homes represent and that belies their apparent modesty." Bow-Wow's GAE House for example... Due in May 2005, hardcover, 112 pages, 120 color photos, 150 line drawings, $19.77 at Amazon. (Via Land+Living)
