London Design Festival: Klaus Haapaniemi at Iittala
by sabine7 / September 18, 2008

Finnish kitchenware and tableware company Iittala hosts a magical exhibition on work by artist Klaus Haapaniemi whose prints are incarnated as limited edition ceramics, as well as available as a poster and other accessories. At first glance, the colourful graphics appear to be traditional florals, but drawn in by the complex swirl of patterns, urban elements and mythical animals can be discerned. The exhibition is beautiful: Haapaniemi's work is the sole focus of a barebones concrete space, so there are no distractions from the neo-woodland scenes that smack of a modern-day Finnish magic or Taika. These would be just the kind of plates that would make kids eat faster, so as to discover what lurks underneath their dinner.
