January Giveaway: Best Mag/ Best part?
We picked up Interior Design's "Bright Bold Bubbly Bestofyear" issue today... spotted some interesting projects; Joel Sanders Architect's Broadway Penthouse loft renovation that combines high style and sustainability, Randy Brown Architects' Hidden Creek eco-home in Omaha, and Andree Putman's Morgans hotel makeover in NYC.
It got us thinking about 'the best' in general. So we have a question for you:
What is your favorite magazine (design or not), and more importantly, what is your favorite part of that magazine?
Leave a comment with your answer.
AND it's time to give stuff away. Today it's tavo gloves. On Monday we'll choose a commenter from this post at random and send them the gloves.

Urbis - A New Zealand mag covering local and international design, fashion, Architecture and anything else that's great right now. The fact that it lists the stockists in New Zealand and Austrailia is very cool as not a lot of design gets this far.
The Insideout mag published in Australia! and the best part about the mag I think is the wonderful photography, it does justice to the design content.
Fab mag!!!
cheers,
Rebecca
hej together...
my favorite magazine is the german edited "AIT" (Architektur Innenausbau Technische Einrichtung), with english summaries! appearing once a month...
great layout and graphics, full stories and plans of projects, special topics for every single magazine like health care buildings, private homes, bank and offices.
Nest - for every part.
Finding a new magazine is always a treat, the freshness that comes from not knowing the formula or style which a magazine follows; when different papers are used through out, it's like the changing terrain on a walk through the country. For this reason I feel like IDEA magazine from Japan is my favorite magazine, with no definite formula it's a new experience each time, you're never quite sure what you will get, buts it's always a pleasant and inspiring experience.
DAMn° Magazine (http://www.damnmagazine.be). Whacky, idiosynchratic, off the beaten track. Favourite part: The "What gets me going"-section, where designers showcase their everyday inspirations.
I would gladly take that pair of gloves.
Also, I love the giant neon coke bottle.
Hands down, Objekt Magazine, which is based in Amsterdam. The entire magazine is basically a place for Hans Fonk to showcase his photography, and fine by me, because I eat it up! The imagery is breath-taking and certainly a treat for any design junkie like me. It's a shame it's only published quarterly.
I read Dwell and two Canadian design magazines, I'd like to get Interior Design but it's not available in Canada. I'll check on the ones posted here to see if they are available here.
I am obsessed with my home decor magazines. Simply obsessed. I keep all of my subscriptions for 2 years and then, I "purge". I go through each issue of EVERY subscription at the end of the 2 years and tear out the yummy parts and place them in a HUGE 3 ring binder in plastic slip covers that are then broken down into sub-categories. This is my source of inspiration. My musings of all things decorative.
So this was a bit of a tough question for me personally to have just one single answer. So I have a bit of a "Top 5" if you will, in no specific order.
1. Elle Decor US Edition and UK Edition
2. Southern Accents
3. Vogue Living Australia Edition
4. House Beautiful
5. Traditional Home
Must reads are 2....
1. Interior Design
2. Architectural Digest
All I have mentioned above to me showcase beautiful homes, the designers that create such beauty and the people that dwell in them. Each publication always featuring the most beautiful and elegant products in home decor fabrics, home accents, the latest paint and wall coverings and a few of them infuse the home with fashion and connect all of the dotted lines for the readers. I could spend countless hours at the newsstand simply in the magazine section.
The Architectural Review is pretty expensive for us Americans (newsstand price is at $25 an issue), but, unlike most architecture mags, it contains very few advertisements so that the beautifully simple layout can remain cohesive. Plus, the chosen projects are gorgeous.
Dwell is pretty good too, but on a non-design-publication note, The New Yorker wins for having the richest articles for not that much money.
I also wouldn't mind a pair of those gloves...
Well... the magazines could be many!
I'm mostly working with architecture now, and my preferred one is the english Architectural Review. For italian language the best is Casabella.
MAKE Magazine! Awesome juxtaposition of old-school hard-copy magazine format full of new-school homebrew technology-maker projects.
As much as I like ID magazine and other more design oriented magazines, I'm a huge fan of National Geographic's Adventure Magazine. A lot of times they will have some interesting innovative products featured in articles. I love the outdoors and spending time outdoors. My favorite section is in the middle where they give usually 10-20 different quick weekend adventure trip suggestions all across the country.
Definite props to Adventure Magazine.
The Economist.
Design folk often spend far too much time looking inwards at beautiful objects, buildings and images, it's always good to look outward and absorb some of the realities of the world.
Complex Magazine, two in one.
I'm a big magazine reader, so there are many favorites (design and otherwise), but my favorite has to be The New Yorker. Great architecture critic, coverage of the arts and current affairs, and always written so well they can make almost any story riveting!
Seed Magazine. Science is Culture, with some of the most gorgeous, design-forward layouts and graphics use I've seen in any publication in years. Also, geek points in that the spine of each issue illustrated the absorption spectrograph of the atomic element that corresponds with that issue number!
ReadyMade Mag or Make Magazine...best mags (right now...)
SPADE. It's a Canadian magazine wherein nothing is off limits... but they're not just trying to ruffle feathers. Rarely does an independent magazine inform me of so many new designers. SPADE does.
I really love the new shelter magazine LoftLife.
You were giving them out as gifts during the Holiday season last year and I got inspired and got my hands on a copy. Beautiful modern designs with awesome, clean layouts.
