Merduban Shelving by lab::istanbul
by sabine7 / February 5, 2009

The Merduban shelving system by lab::Istanbul, a team of four designers and architects, repurposes the classic wooden ladder by adding shelves. Merduban can be used as a single unit, or expanded every time a ladder is added. Because of the quantity and positioning of the rungs, the shelves need not be laid out in a uniform fashion, but placed at will to vary the look. Both effect and idea are very simple, but also effective.

beauty and harmony

isnt it a little sad that it took 4 arch/designers to come to this? albeit being beautiful... still.. 4 people?!!!

I agree with shamshur. This same idea has been in every DIY design book since the late 60's. As a low cost, high effect shelf, it works. As high design, it doesn't. This is exactly the same way we painted shutters when I was a house painter. There is nothing ironic, or geometrically significant about the set. It seems little more than an expensive waste of space and material. When form trumps function, design dies and a service and is resurrected as a play thing of the rich.
