360 Winnett: And Then There Was Drywall
by sabine7 / April 6, 2009

It's been 222 days since we began construction, and we finally have drywall. I'm actually shocked how quickly everything was installed, although they still have to mud, tape and sand everything. But for some reason, I thought it would take a little more than 3 days to install the boards. The installer's efficiency has been quite remarkable and they seem to be leaving very little waste as well... These guys clearly understand how to measure and use a router.

Why did they install the drywall horizontally? And why make holes for lamps/spotlights before paint ? That doesn't seem efficient at all! And do they line up nicely ?

Drywall can be hung anyway you want.. the goal is to have the least amount of joints.

and why would you ever paint before cutting holes.. I don't understand the logic here.

A bit late to answer your questions :)

As a carpenter/builder from Norway my experience (and learning) have taught me to hang the drywall vertically. I know that Americans are known for their skills in drywalling (as in the drywall, plaster, sanding, paint) but my personal experience tells me that a light source coming from the ceiling can very easily show the joints if the drywall joint is horizontal.

The point about the holes is that you don't want plaster mixed in the paint while painting. Now, in Norway the usually paint manually with rollers. Maybe its spray paint that's used a lot in the US ?

It´s very nice to see the different techniques used in other countries. Sorry if I acted rude in any way before, I was just a bit too curious :)
