Designers tend to rely on foam to provide softness and comfort to furniture, but SHE Design Studio has developed a textile called "Between" to replace foam as this key element.

AKU
The Oslo-based studio presented three designs made of Between at the Salone Satellite in Milan this year, each emphasizing different properties of this useful material.

Woven into a single fabric made up of wool and thermoplastic yarns, Between is also sound-absorbing and, therefore, excellent for the AKU room divider.

AKU is a screen set into a base that functions also as seating. On one side is a wooden seat, while the other is made of Between for a softer surface.

DUO
A combination of fibres is used to create a textile that is both soft and hard, for comfort and strength. It becomes both the construction material and the upholstery - no filling required.

The DUO lounge chair highlights this textile as a replacement for foam.

FOFO
FOFO is made entirely out of Between, with a steel ring at the very bottom to keep the textile surface from being damaged by floors. The focus here is on Between's construction properties.
