Michael Sillitoe's Draw is a dimmable luminaire integrated into the surface of a table.

This interactive project fully implicates the user, who chooses the intensity of the light by drawing out the light by hand from its recessed space in the table.

Here's how Michael explains the project:

"Most electronic objects rely on graphic devices to indicate the amount or intensity to which an ambiguous knob relates.

Physically drawing this light from the unused space beneath the table increases the brightness, the user receives a tactile response to the act of dimming, with a visible statement of intensity. (...)"

"We studied the simple object of a table, for me it has two distinct areas. A space directly above the table which is in constant us for active purposes, and the void beneath it which are used for non-active storage etc. Treating the table's surface as barrier between two areas, we designed an object that could interact with this imaginary field."

"When the Light is needed and maneuvered into the active space it illuminates, the more of the object which is moved into the space the brighter the light becomes, its a very natural idea of control. The graphical symbols which are usually used to dictate the intensity of a random dial or knob are discarded, the object becomes an illustration of its own state. (...)"

"When the object is not needed, it retreats back from the active space."

"The cold light sources can easily be adjusted by hand, a specially developed mechanism was developed to position the tubes. The product is also designed to be water resistant to prevent damages from spillage."
